If we are being honest…

Few teachers teach about women in their history classrooms. Many classes lack inclusivity, leaving people of color, women and LGBTQ populations out of the main stories being taught. Students want to see themselves represented in their learning — it makes it more interesting for them when they can relate to the material being taught. As a student, I was bored learning about endless wars and presidential campaigns. There had to be something else! Where were the women and people who looked like me in history?

This book is about my experience teaching Women and Gender Studies at the high school level. I have been a teacher for 10 years and every year my goal is to bring more voices, especially those of women, into my classroom. Researching and creating new material for my students was a challenge for me and a way to keep my job from becoming ordinary. After reading, you will be wondering how to empower students to learn about women and where this book has been your whole life.

As a woman and historian, I now realize that the patriarchy did a great job of erasing our role in history. We can undo this by uncovering our past and teaching younger generations about women in history. Women’s history is out there for students to learn, but it is our job to help it enter their classrooms!
