Intro to Gender project
Hey teachers! Not sure how to help students understand gender roles? Here is a free project resource that is simple but effective for your students. I have found this project to be most successful by giving students as little direction as possible — let them explore and understand gender roles in action on their own!
viewing ourselves and the other
This free classroom activity is designed to encourage students to imagine themselves as another gender. For example, if a student identifies as a boy, have him imagine himself as a girl and draw a self-portrait. (Students may choose to portray themselves as non-binary.) I do warn that students will inevitably push boundaries. However, what I have found is that students who create self-portraits that are stereotypes, are often corrected by their peers and shown how it is wrong and insulting to the gender they are portraying.
In small groups, have students share their portraits, which should include their interests, hobbies, future profession and style choices as the other gender. You will be absolutely surprised with what your students create! This activity is full of teachable moments.
